A beautiful college bound girl disturbingly preoccupied with the threat of nuclear destruction falls in love with a handsome ex-con who is rumored to have murdered the father of his high school sweetheart. A warm-hearted satire about idealistic young love, capitalist moralizing in the home, and the need for work one loves.
Hartley's first feature and one of his most beloved comedies. Featuring the late Adrienne Shelly in her first film role before playing Maria in Hartley's era defining second feature Trust (1990). And Robert John Burke plays the enigmatic mechanic, Josh Hutton - an actor who would appear in a number of Hartley's later films.
A delightful but clear eyed satire.
"Hartley's debut deserves heralding" Rolling Stone - Peter Travers
"Eminently watchable and modern" Empire - Ian Nathan
