When Joe Fulton's bank account and credit cards are temporarily frozen by the tax authorities, he must walk from Brooklyn to the Upper West Side of New York City to get a set of keys. Along the way, he fixes the various problems of strangers he meets. He can't help himself. His own ambitions are constantly interrupted by his willingness and ability to go out of his way for others.
